Hungary Residence by Investment

Hungary used to have a Residence by Investment (RBI) program known as the Hungarian Investor Residency Bond Program, but it was suspended in 2017. Currently, Hungary does not offer an official RBI program through investment in bonds or real estate. However, there are alternative routes for acquiring residency in Hungary through other investment or business-related activities.

Key Requirements
  • Proof of Funds:
Applicants must demonstrate financial resources to support themselves and their business or profession.
  • Clean Criminal Record:
A clean criminal record from the applicant’s home country is required.
  • Business Plan:
For business-related residency applications, a well-defined business plan showing the potential economic contribution to Hungary is essential.
  • Proof of Accommodation:
Applicants must provide proof of a residential address in Hungary.
  • Health Insurance:
Comprehensive health insurance is required for applicants and their family members.
Application Process
  • Submitting the Application

An applicant must obtain a Guest Investor Visa and declare their commitment to one of the investment options during the visa application process, although finalizing the investment is not mandatory at this stage. After receiving the visa, they must travel to Hungary, where they will complete their investment within three months and apply for a Guest Investor Residence Permit.

  • Background and Financial Checks

Hungarian authorities will review the application, verifying the legitimacy of the business or self-employment activity. Proof of the committed investment must be provided during the residence permit application. Proof includes, supporting financial documentation for real estate acquisition or donation.

  • Issuance of Residence Permit

Once all requirements are met, including proof of investment, the applicant, along with their spouse and children, will receive a long-term residence permit valid for 10 years. The permit is renewable for another 10 years, provided the investment is maintained.

  • Renewals and Permanent Residency

A guest investor can become eligible for permanent residence in Hungary after lawfully residing there for three years. When applying after 1 January 2025, passing a written cultural exam in Hungarian will be required. Citizenship eligibility typically follows permanent residence after at least eight years of residence.

  • Citizenship Eligibility

Permanent residents can apply for Hungarian citizenship after at least eight years of residence in the country, provided they meet the residency requirements. Passing a Hungarian cultural exam is mandatory for citizenship. Exceptions may apply for those with Hungarian minor children or spouses.
